Tsuchin (Philip) Chu is professor of the School of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering and the director of the Engineering Science PhD program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Chu has conducted research for over 40 years in areas such as NDE, additive manufacturing (AM), biomedical engineering, experimental mechanics, and composite materials. He is a pioneer of digital image correlation and is at the cutting edge of research in NDE and AM. He has more than 150 peer- reviewed journal publications and conference proceedings and over US$2.9 million in grants from NASA, Boeing, US Air Force and Navy, IBM, Aerospace Corp., and more. Chu had served on ASNT Board of Directors for two terms. He is a subject matter expert for the NASA Engineering and Safety Center NDE Technical Disciplinary Team. Chu is a co-founder of Clipius and ISAT LLC, both think-tank companies produce intellectual property in the areas of defense and aerospace.
Chu is an ASNT Fellow (class of 2019) and received multiple ASNT Faculty and Fellowship Grants. He is also the recipient of the ASNT Mentoring Award in 2014, Lester/Mehl Honor Lecture in 2019, and the ASNT Research Recognition for Sustained Excellence in 2023.
