The industry standards for aerospace liquid penetrant and magnetic particle inspections are ASTM E1417/1417M and ASTM E1444/E1444M, respectively. ASTM E1417/E1417M replaced its military predecessors, MIL-STD-6866 and the earlier MIL-I-6866. ASTM E1444/E1444M replaced its military predecessors, MIL-STD-1949 and the earlier MIL‑I‑6868. These two ASTM documents are under continual revision at least every five years to ensure that they are accurate and reflect current state-of-the-art inspection practices. The “M” designation at the end of these standards indicate conformance to the ASTM convention regarding when a standard contains both English and metric units (for example, measuring UV-A irradiance for a minimum of 1000 μW/cm2 at 15 in.).
