Discontinuities can be introduced into double metal composite plates both in manufacturing and in service, resulting in decreased performance of the material and even accidents. This paper introduces the phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) principle and sound radiation theory for use in detecting discontinuities in these types of plates. Artificial discontinuities introduced into stainless steel and carbon steel specimens were studied. Results show that using PAUT for stainless steel and carbon steel specimens with side-drilled hole (SDH) and artificial pit discontinuities can achieve real-time imaging and accurately determine the size and location of the discontinuity. The error of the measurement is less than 6% and 12% for artificial SDHs and pits, respectively.
