Phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) is a very popular modern technology in nondestructive testing (NDT). The most advantageous aspect of PAUT is the visualization of the discontinuity on the part or weld to be inspected. This ultrasonic technique is composed of mainly two parts: (1) the ultrasonic probe that contains small packed piezoelectric crystals, and (2) the electronics that fire the crystals to shape the sound beam. The advantages of PAUT make it a very powerful tool for weld inspections. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the effectiveness of PAUT on discontinuity sizing for rib-to-deck weldments of bridge steel structures.
