Effective Beam Width (EBW) is referenced in many ultrasonic inspection specifications used throughout the world with little to no definition or technical explanation, which is odd, since most of these noted specifications reference EBW with regards to inspection coverage. What is EBW? How is EBW applied to these specifications and inspection processes without a definition? Herein lies the problem. This paper will attempt to highlight the ultrasonic beam characteristics as they pertain to rotating full-length ultrasonic testing systems as illustrated by using typical reference standards. These results may lead to an understanding and true definition of EBW but may also show how this definition should apply to these specifications, as well as others.
