Practical and Economic Advantages of FMC/TFM

Many equipment manufacturers now offer FMC/TFM as a technology on their advanced UT instruments. Standards development is ongoing in ASME and IIW working groups. The number of successful applications is growing. An overview will be presented on the status of standards development, as well as an overview of some of the successful applications. Most literature on the technology has focused on the ability to deliver better image quality. The focus of this paper is on showing how the improved images of FMC/TFM give practical advantages to NDT practitioners, and how these advantages solve engineering issues and add economic value. In other words, the paper describes some of the reasons for using FMC/TFM over other advanced UT techniques.
