Overview of the Nondestructive Evaluation Research Laboratory at the Federal Highway Administration

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Laboratory is part of the Office of Infrastructure Research and Development at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center. The NDE Laboratory conducts state-of-the-art research, testing, and deployment of nondestructive testing (NDT) systems and technologies for condition assessment of highway infrastructure. The purpose of the research activities is to address the growing needs of the FHWA and stakeholders with state-of-the-art NDT tools, which facilitate the reliable and accurate NDE of the nation’s highway infrastructure. The NDE Laboratory has acted as a resource for development, deployment, and evaluation of innovative and existing NDE technologies for the FHWA, various state departments of transportation (DOTs), industry, and academia. In this paper, the strategic vision and roadmap of the FHWA’s Office of Infrastructure Research and Development with regard to NDE are presented. Furthermore, recent research and development activities focusing on national highway infrastructure NDE needs are presented.
