Orthotropic steel decks provide a modular and prefabricated design solution that offer efficient and cost-effective modern structures with extended service life. One of the main challenges in an orthotropic deck fabrication is to ensure the partial penetration welding conformity and quality. In this context, Canam Bridges requested Nucleom services in order to develop an efficient technique to determine the percentage of weld penetration on an orthotropic steel deck. Nucleom developed an advanced ultrasonic testing technique: semi-automated Phased Array UT using Olympus Omniscan MX2 and the chain scanner.
