The use of instrument simulators provides an effective method for conducting realistic hands-on training in the use of portable instruments and electronic dosimeters for radiation detection. Practical training scenarios can be used without any restrictions regarding the use of actual radioactive material. Newer simulator technology provides trainers the opportunity to conduct realistic exercises that involve multiple sources with outputs as high as 99,000 R/h at 1’ distance. This paper will review accepted training objectives in use at commercial nuclear power, homeland security, and industrial NDT training facilities. A review of commercially available training simulators will be provided. Training methods to support objectives will be presented for industrial radiography training, including source recovery operations and area posting and controls.
