Ultrasonic inspection of highly attenuating materials is a challenge. Multi-layer materials that include honeycomb or other core materials like Rohacell, make up a large number of these parts. Defects can include delamination, porosity and skin to core disbonds. Typical methods include automated Through Transmission Ultrasonics (TTU) squirter and immersion testing. But what can you do when the part cannot be immersed or contact water at all. This presentation will show another method, Non-Contact Ultrasonics, for inspecting these difficult materials.
