Ultrasonic Detection of Flaws in Metallic Components using Conventional UT and Phased Array UT Techniques

In the conventional ultrasonic shear wave testing of welds, angle beam probes of various refracted angles are used. Commonly used probes are of angles 45, 60 and 70 degrees. They are used one at a time. With the phased array probe and equipment one need not change the probes. The multi-element probe can scan the test sample with shear wave refracted beams over the chosen range of angles, typically from 40 to70 degrees. Along with convenience of phased array technique in detecting flaws in pulse echo mode, echoes from the various geometrical features of the test sample are generated along with the desired flaw echo. Sometimes these are easy to identify from the flaw echo while in many other instances they can be confused with the real flaw echo. The paper will discuss signals arising from corners, signals from creeping waves and signals from mode conversion and methods of identifying their features from the features of desired flaw echoes.
