Structural Integrity of Fiber Reinforced Plastic Piping

Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) pipes are on the rise due to their superior corrosion resistance, light weight, and high strength-to-weight ratio, which make them attractive in many industrial product applications. Discontinuities in FRP pipes could be introduced during their life cycle. Knowledge of FRP piping discontinuities, inspection techniques, and FRP pipe material characterization prevents any unexpected failures. This paper studies the structural integrity of FRP pipes, their manufacturing techniques, and the types of discontinuities accompanying FRP pipes design and manufacturing. Different techniques and strategies for FRP pipe inspection, nondestructive techniques, are presented and their strength and limitations are investigated as well.
