Production tubing leaks account for a high percentage of all well failures. These failures may cause personal injury, loss of life, loss of valuable tubular assets, and loss of income from nonproduction. Possible blowout failures can damage or destroy topside assets. An even higher percentage of tubing failures are due to corrosion pitting and rod wear. Seventy percent of production tubing suffers rod wear, often going undetected until failure occurs. This presentation explores the development and application of a portable, noncontact, six function Electromagnetic Inspection System that quickly discovers failed pipes and, using the associated well profile, also alerts the oil company to marginal tubing that will possibly fail in the near future.
