Noncontact Surface Discontinuity Detection for Metal Material using a Displacement Current Sensor

Displacement current sensors have been successfully used for noncontact measurement of electrophysiological signals such as electrocardiograms and electroencephalograms. This paper applies this technique for nondestructive testing and proposes a new surface discontinuity detection technique for metal materials. The fundamental theory of displacement current sensors is briefly introduced, and an inspection principle for metal specimens is described. A 2D finite element method was employed to model the electric field distributions from the probe and to figure out how they interacted with the conducting specimen. Physical experiments with a prototype probe were also carried out, and the effect of crack size on the conducting specimen was studied.
