Integrated NDT Approach to Evaluate the Condition of an Existing Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement and Derive a Durable and Cost-Effective Rehabilitation Strategy

Many of the roads and street managed by departments of transportation, cities, and counties require major rehabilitation. It is common practice that pavement engineers recommend applying a standard thickness of an asphalt overlay to any pavement structure requiring rehabilitation. However, this practice is not always the most inexpensive. A durable and cost effective overlay requires knowledge of the condition of the pavement structure. Nondestructive testing (NDT) equipment can often be used to evaluate the condition and the integrity of the pavement, and determine the material properties for use in selecting a cost effective and adequate rehabilitation strategy. This paper documents the results of NDT technology in assisting in the evaluation of the conditions of a jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP), and in the selection of an adequate rehabilitation strategy that produces a substantial extension in service life by improving pavement condition and ride quality
