Guided wave testing (GWT) is now widely use for the screening of in-service pipelines. The benefits of GWT which have made it so popular are the ability to quickly and cost-effectively inspect long lengths of pipe and to inspect pipes which have limited access, for example, due to physical constraints. In recent years, the method has been applied to an increasing number of specialised applications, including the screening of high temperature piping in various industries. Traditionally, long range GWT utilizes either piezoelectric transducers1 or magnetostitive sensors. However, testing extremely hot pipes operating at up to 750oF (400oC) presents significant challenges to GWT equipment and often require special testing protocols. A successful inspection in this application requires the long term survival of the transducers and that the GW data produced is stable and repeatable. Furthermore, the effect on the GW data due to the temperature increase needs to be adequately addressed.
