Engineering a Reliable NDT Procedure

Applications of NDT procedures continue to grow at a rapid rate. Each procedure and application must be supported by data that provides confidence in the applicability and reliability of the test results provided. This paper identifies and describes considerations and a protocol that may be used to develop, validate, apply and manage and support a useful NDT procedure. Discussions include familiar steps in (1) understanding requirements; (2) developing and understanding causal relationships between requirements and NDT results; (3) selection of representative artifacts to explore operational capabilities; (4) development of supporting data for application and: (5) validation of results on target anomalies. The importance of margins, measurement system and procedures reproducibility and repeatability in data output are emphasized. The role and importance of the performing, NDT operator in both consistent measurement process control and results discrimination are addressed.
