Determining the Dynamic Modulus of a Viscoelastic Asphalt Mixture Using an Impact Resonance Test With Damping Effect

A nondestructive technique to test asphalt concrete mixtures is proposed that considers the thermorheological behavior, the temperature dependence of material properties, and a mastercurve fitting method of a Nelder–Mead simplex search to determine the dynamic moduli of asphalt concrete mixtures using a transmissibility function, resonance frequencies at various temperatures, and loss factors. To verify this nondestructive testing technique based on an impact resonance method, an indirect tension test (IDT) was conducted using a temperature and frequency sweep test. Graphical comparisons of the results of the nondestructive impact resonance and IDT tests showed that the dynamic modulus master curves agreed well.
