Air-Coupled Ultrasound Methods for Detection and Characterization of Out-of-Plane Fiber Waviness

Several ultrasonic approaches have been tested to determine the ability of detecting marcels in fiber laminate composite materials, demonstrating sensitivity to the resin-rich pocket typically associated with marcels and showing how marcels may bend or steer a propagating longitudinal wave. Additionally, a Rayleigh wave technique has been demonstrated using air-coupled UT probes that allows both the detection and characterization of marcel aspect ratios, while providing a sufficiently large effective aperture to allow fast scanning of the large areas required in wind turbine blades.
