Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing Saves Time, Increases Productivity
While radiography is a sensitive and highly reliable method of finding defects in welding and related applications, sometimes fabrication shops and field erectors are on tight schedules where a shutdown for a radiographic inspection can result in increased production costs or delayed deliveries. The same can be said about field erection of a bridge where a web or flange splice has been made, and the inspection must be done in a populated area or if time is of the essence. Phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) offers a safe alternative, with permanent record, that does not require production shutdowns. This article presents the benefits of PAUT for weldments as compared to radiography and conventional ultrasonic testing.
