The recent rise in popularity of cable stayed highway bridges has resulted in increased inspection challenges. As many structures enter their second and third decade of service, owners are posed with uncertainty regarding cable vulnerability, corrosion, and fatigue during inspection. Unlike other critical structural components, the cables’ Main Tension Elements are completely hidden from view by corrosion protection systems, such as HDPE pipes, and are difficult to access. These issues are amplified at the cable anchorage zones, areas of high stress resulting from wind and traffic induced vibrations, where corrosion barriers are typically discontinuous, and many bridges have had problems with leakage and moisture accumulation in the lower anchorages. The options available to inspect these critical regions are limited and costly.
