This paper discusses the completed, ongoing and planned actions to assess and preserve the main cables of the Anthony Wayne Bridge. The AWB is undergoing an extensive rehabilitation in two phases. First the approaches will be replaced and superstructure will be rehabilitated. The bridge will be closed for eighteen months during this phase. Upon completion of the superstructure rehabilitation, steps to preserve main suspension cables will be taken. Prior to taking action to preserve cables, however, it is necessary to evaluate the condition of the cables and determine ways to monitor the degradation in cables’ strength over time over the life of the bridge..
Invasive inspection based on NCHRP-534, acoustic emission reports and location of past inspection windows was carried out on total of four panels in November 2012. The laboratory tests on wire samples taken from inspection have been used to predict the strength and aging of the cables. The cables have been acoustically monitored for potential wire breaks continuously since July 2011. During superstructure rehabilitation, wire break monitoring will continue and field studies of invasive and noninvasive corrosion detection techniques will be performed. Based on this, the approach to long term maintenance of the cable will be selected.
