As the population of NDT practitioners ages, the need to replace them as they depart the industry becomes more urgent. A young student’s educational paths are often firmly set long before the student has any knowledge of NDT, making the transition from other fields into NDT more difficult. Therefore, introducing young people to NDT is crucial for generating future professional interest in the field. The author will give an overview of how to prepare, practice, and present a worthwhile guest lecture and demonstration in NDT within a school setting. Emphasis will be placed on coordinating the presentation with the regular course instructor, incorporating the NDT presentation within an existing curriculum, and ensuring that the NDT presentation is capable of generating specific educational outcomes. The author will also present several brief case studies of such presentations he has given at the elementary, junior high, and university levels.
