A new device for evaluation of bridge coatings based upon active thermography has been developed and applied to in-situ bridge inspections. The method provides quantitative measurements of the adhesion and bonding of bridge coatings to substrates. It very reliably detects and provides a record of coating disbonds but it also provides thermal effusively measurements which might be probative for the quantitative evaluation of the coating system. The theory of operation and laboratory and field test results are presented. The system is based upon a microbolometer thermal imager resulting in a small, rugged and relatively affordable system.
