Evaluation of Signal Frequency and Testing Speed on Wireless Eddy Current Inspection

Wireless eddy current testing is a convenient NDT method which has the potential for the inspection of aircraft structures and engines. The wireless communication idea between the eddy current probe and main unit will increase the capabilities such as more maneuverability and lower cost. When compared to conventional wired eddy current technique, the wireless communication should have very small effects on the quality and accuracy of the inspection results. In this research the previously developed prototype of wireless communication eddy current probe, which was tested before for its ability of the flaw detection and signal transmission on standard testing blocks, was set up to carry out experiments on the detection of defects in a friction stir weld (FSW) sample to evaluate the prototype’s capability to detect real flaws. FSW is a new and expanding method to join metals using a solid state bonding process in aerospace and other industries. Weld evaluation experiments were done by both conventional wired eddy current testing and the wireless system.
