There has been an increasing need to develop technologies for the rapid collection of bridge condition data that does not interfere with traffic at the same time as keeping inspectors safe. Current methods frequently include closing lanes and inspectors walking next to open lanes of traffic while dragging chains or tapping with hammers. With advances in optical and thermal camera technology and decreasing cost, surface spalling and sub-surface delaminations on bridge decks can be quantified and mapped from vehicles traveling at near highway speeds (45mph). 3DOBS (3D Optical Bridge-evaluation System) and BridgeGuard are combined on a single vehicle platform to collect both surface and subsurface features in a single pass over a bridge deck. This allows for a more complete assessment of bridge decks without the need for closing lanes or having inspectors on the roadway, at the same time significantly reducing the time, and therefore costs, of this assessment. Imagery collected from these systems are used to generate GIS layers of the location and size of spalls and delaminations. Rapidly advancing technology has enabled development of a multi-spectral approach to system deployment that can quantify bridge deck distresses at high speed and low cost while increasing safety.
