The Advantages of Using Eddy Current Technology for Weld Inspection

Many problems are encountered during the practical in-service inspection of welds particularly when a coating such as paint or even a metallic coating protects the components. Removal of these coatings to facilitate MPI inspection can cost more than the inspection task. EN 1711 2000 standardises the application of this method. This presentation will examine how the correct use of eddy current instruments along with the Weld probe and paint probe can allow welds to be inspected cost effectively and efficiently. Rope access inspection with eddy current is also advantageous due to the portability of the equipment when compared to other NDT methods. The main area of this application has been offshore but also in areas as diverse as nuclear power plants, large public art, railway axles and amusement rides. This paper will highlight some of the recent developments in the application of this method.
