Automated NDT Machines for CFC Parts of the New Airbus A350XWB

AREVA NDE Solutions has a long history applying advanced nondestructive examination (NDE) techniques to nuclear as well as to industrial customers. The aircraft industry is one key segment for AREVA NDE Solutions where migration to new composite materials requires innovative inspection systems to comply with customer demands for a reliable and fast inspection of complex parts. AREVA NDE Solutions has been selected as a preferred inspection system supplier for the new Airbus A350 XWB (Figure 1), and has installed several systems in Germany, France and Spain dedicated to assure the quality of safety critical components mostly made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFCs). The systems are built primarily with linear gantry mechanics comprised of 6 and more coordinated axes of motion. (Figure 2) This paper discusses the machines after two years in industrial operation with examples of single 6-axes gantry systems, large wing cover inspection systems with 12 axes and a dedicated system to inspect the closed aft section (section 19). The systems deploy various phased-array contact techniques from simple skin inspection to dedicated HAT or Omega Stringer assemblies.
