Ultrasonic guided waves are used to inspect an interface between an anisotropic layer and an elastic, metallic half-space. The interface is being inspected for weak or disbonded regions. The anisotropic layer is a composite material. This research investigates the possibility of inspecting through a thick composite layer. The hybrid analytical finite element method is used to model the problem which involves generating dispersion curves and wave structures and searching for optimum excitation points on the dispersion curves in frequency/phase velocity space. A physical experiment examines the possibility of inspecting from on top of the composite layer as well as from directly on top of the metallic half-space. Results from the modeling and experiment will be presented and discussed.
