Teaching NDT Procedures at the University Level

The nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of materials course for engineering and engineering technology students of Drexel University presents principles of ultrasound NDE combining hands-on laboratory experience with lectures. The main objective of this course is to introduce students to fundamentals of ultrasound measurements and to demonstrate the basic principles of ultrasound NDE by combining hands-on laboratory experience with lectures. The hands-on course consists of two parts. The first part, which emphasizes on the foundations of NDE, does not covered by training programs. Students learn the engineering and physical principles of measurements of sound velocity in different materials, attenuation coefficients, and the directivity pattern of circular transducers. In addition, the definition of decibel and the reflection coefficient are described in detail. In the second part of the course, NDE techniques of parts and materials are presented and applied through real-life problems. Students learn calibration and testing procedures, including evaluation of dimensions of various objects, locations and dimensions of cracks, inclusions, and other defects. The required text for the course is Ultrasonic Testing Classroom Training Book by Paul Marks (quoted thereafter as “the book”).
