The last decades have seen an unprecedented expansion of the NDT activities in general and the ultrasonic inspection in particular. In the tube and pipe-manufacturing sector the electrical resistance welded (ERW) products are used these days in increasingly demanding applications like hydroforming and extraction and transportation of oil and gas. High standards and production rates make it imperative the use of automated ultrasonic inspection equipment. The design of the equipment and the level of experience and understanding the operators have are the main factors that drive the confidence level in the inspection process. The inspection itself although regulated to a certain degree by a few standards it has important specifics that are not part of the classic UT training nor are they part of the training provided by the equipment manufacturer. Often ignored these specifics can have a negative impact on the inspection results.
