Inspection of structurally critical cable and strand components of bridges is important for integrity assurance. In recent years, various technologies have been proposed for inspecting cables and strands for corrosion damage. The authors have developed a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) approach, termed the magnetic main flux method (MMFM), that advances this technology compared to existing technologies. The purpose of the present paper is to explain MMFM and report results of tests and demonstrations that have been performed.
