Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) is a very efficient tool to generate surface waves without couplant. The advantages include the ability to inspect very hot or cold materials, ease of integration in automated environments, and a significant increase in repeatability and reliability when compared with conventional piezoelectric transducers. In this paper, we introduce the principles of EMAT, different configurations of transducers, instrumentation options and practical applications. Sample results of real-life applications using portable and automated, in-line EMAT systems are also presented.
