Because of its ability to examine a long length of pipeline from a single position, the guided wave inspection technique is the best candidate for long-term structural health m onitoring (SHM) of lines that are difficult to access, such as buried or cased pipelines. This involves permanent installation of guided wave probes on the line, establishing baseline data, periodically collecting data on-line, and tracking any condition changes by comparing the baseline and periodically collected data. To accurately track the condition changes, the long-term (over tens of years) stability and reliability of the installed probe are essential, particularly when the access to the installed probe requires costly preparation such as excavation. In this presentation, a highly reliable, corrosion proof, magnetostrictive sensor (MsS) probe called MsT that was developed for long-term SHM applications are described together with a reliable coupling approach that, if degraded under operating environmental conditions of pipelines, can be restored remotely.
