Bond integrity is of interest to researchers in nondestructive evaluation because it is used as an indicator when assessing the health of structures. In this study, a thick viscoelastic layer bonded to an elastic half-space is considered and a guided wave ultrasonic signal is used to assess bond integrity. Analytical and finite element models are developed to describe wave propagation. Experiments are performed on a 1-inch thick steel plate with a 1-inch thick polymer cast onto the surface which contains both good bond and defect regions. Results of models and experiments are discussed. Physically based features, including amplitude ratio, arrival time, and pulse width, are identified which may be used to assess bond integrity.
