Current Bridge Management System at NYSDOT

The current bridge management process at NYSDOT involves integration of data from several sources into a tool which is being used in forecasting and decision making in throughout the state. NYSDOT conducts element level inspections at span level using a system that predates federal as well as AASHTO CoRe element based inspection systems. Element level inventory and inspection data have been used to develop deterioration models. These models, along with expected life of bridge actions (such as maintenance, rehabilitation, and replacement) can be used to forecast bridge element conditions, and subsequently the entire bridge and network conditions. Element level costs are determined using historic costs data maintained by the Department, and maintenance costs are also added from a maintenance work tracking program. Department specific rules, based on the bridge management goals, are used in the decision tree to make work recommendations on an element and bridge level. “What if” scenarios are run using these work recommendations, imported programmed work, or a combination of both to forecast network conditions and display performance measures. This paperpresentation will detail NYSDOT bridge management goals, the framework used to make appropriate decisions to meet these goals based on available data, areas that needs improvement, and future direction.
