Wireless Ultrasonic Thickness Monitoring at Elevated Temperatures

This article describes the development and technical challenges that had to be overcome to design and commercialize a first of its kind wireless and permanently installable, ultrasonic wall thickness monitoring sensor. By means of a robust stainless steel waveguide the sensor isolates the fragile and sensitive electronic and ultrasonic transducer from harsh environments. The whole system acts as an “acoustic cable” that allows ultrasonic signals to be channeled from the electronics end into the harsh testing environment and back without excessive signal degradation and distortion.
