Simulation of X-ray images is useful in a number of contexts, for example as a guide in the interpretation of experimental results, for the exploration of the effects of a wide range of imaging parameters, for the generation of known data sets to aid in understanding of tomographic reconstructions, etc. This paper describes X-ray image simulation using a popular, freely downloadable ray tracing program called Povray. In our ray tracing “scenes”, we define an X-ray tube (the light source), sample objects made of various materials, and an X-ray detector (the camera).
