SHRP 2 R06(B): Evaluating Applications of Field Spectroscopy Devices to Fingerprint Commonly Used Construction Materials

The second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) contracted the University of Connecticut multi-disciplinary Research Team to investigate the applicability of various spectroscopic methods to fingerprinting commonly used highway transportation construction materials. This paper summarizes Phase II of the SHRP2 R06 (B) project, “Evaluating Applications of Field Spectroscopy Devices to Fingerprint Commonly Used Construction Materials.” In general, this project consists of three phases. In the first phase, a broad literature review and survey of state highway agencies were conducted. These items helped to establish a current state of practice with regards to spectroscopic methods and their application to QC/QC processes in the field. The objective of the second phase was to investigate a feasibility of spectroscopic methods in the laboratory conditions to several categories of highway materials, such as structural paints, pavement markings, epoxy adhesives, concrete and its admixtures, and asphalt concrete. The goal of the second phase was to identify the most suitable combinations of methods and materials and to develop draft field procedures for each combination. These procedures will be further verified and refined in the third phase when portable spectroscopic devices will be deployed in the field on real construction projects.
