Rapid Performance Monitoring of Highway Infrastructures using Chaos Theory Analysis

Chaos theory analysis concerns the nonlinear response behavior in structures. Its potential application to highway infrastructures can include: monitoring performance of structures, identifying critical damage prone locations, and detecting hazardous loading conditions in structures. Recent research at the FHWA NDE Center had applied chaos theory analysis to some of these topics. Research analyzed the chaotic behavior from responses of highway bridge structures and used unbiased probability density function with random variable polynomial chaoses to extract the chaotic trajectories from bridge responses.
