Orientation Dependence of Dislocation Damping of Ultrasonic Waves in Hexagonal Metals

This work was performed to provide fundamental information on the propagating characteristics of plane waves in hexagonal crystalline metals. Of particular interest was the desire to determine relative damping of ultrasonic waves caused by dislocation motion initiated by the traveling waves. For various directions of propagation of plane waves, calculations were made for the velocity, the displacement vector, the energy flux and the dislocation orientation factors for each of the three possible wave modes in five metals of hexagonal symmetry: zinc, magnesium, cadmium, beryllium and titanium.
