This paper presents descriptions of various nondestructive testing methods and the practical challenges faced during the testing and interpretation of the data. Three case histories are presented that provide real-world applications of some of the nondestructive testing methods. One case history includes the performance of crosshole tomography to evaluate the in-situ quality of the various materials that make up the massive tower caissons of the Brooklyn Bridge. Another case history presents the use of parallel seismic testing to estimate lengths of friction piles along the busy Belt Parkway in Brooklyn. The third case history presents the results of sonic echo / impulse response (SE/IR) testing used to evaluate the integrity and as-built lengths of tapered concrete piles at a wharf in the port of Los Angeles.
