
The noncontact air coupled technique offers the distinct advantage of the elimination of water contamination of the test piece, the elimination of water handling and purification systems (pumps, tanks or collection basins, filters and more), and the elimination of contaminated water disposal issues. For these reasons, it is particularly well-suited to the testing of engineered materials that may be damaged by water incursion or will be subject to additional bonding procedures subsequent to testing, such as honeycomb core materials, foam core materials, ceramic matrix materials, graphite epoxy lay-ups, metal laminates, and many other engineered materials.
