Evaluation of the Route 615 Chickahominay River Bridge using Ground Penetrating Radar and Impact Echo Scanning

Visual and non-destructive inspection of the bridge revealed that there are several factors hindering the bridge’s performance. The loss of shear keys and the constant disregard for the 3-ton posted weight limit is causing individual girders to be overloaded multiple times per day. The non-destructive results revealed severe corrosion damage that extends well beyond the visible spall locations of the girder. There was also a strong correlation in the identification of damaged areas by the IES and GPR, which both revealed significantly more damage to the prestressing strands than was initial perceived. Both GPR and IES complement each other to more effectively locate corrosion damage.
