AE Inspection and Monitoring for Highway and Bridge: Case Studies in Japan

Applications of acoustic emission (AE) techniques to inspection and monitoring of infrastructures in service have been actively investigated in Japan. This is because AE methods are known to be promising techniques for evaluating the structural integrity and for detecting damages of superstructures and substructures. In particular, AE monitoring can be carried out without stopping traffics on highways and bridges. Here, case studies of AE applications to highway bridges in Japan are reviewed. These are AE monitoring in RC highway bridge, steel highway bridge and two prestressed-concrete (PC) bridges. Summarizing these results, future directions for AE applications to highways and bridges are discussed.
