Leveraging Technology for Performance Based Bridge Engineering

In this Back to Basics, the authors discuss the challenging task of performing structural health monitoring (SHM) in the civil constructed environment. The paper describes the application of SHM to bridges for the objective analysis of lifecycle benefit/cost or performance based engineering of the system.
