Several regions of localized corrosion were detected during inspection of fl uid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU) piping. The fitness-for-service (FFS) assessment has been carried out according to API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 for a piping section by use of remaining strength factor (RSF) approach. Results indicate that the piping should be rerated or some remedial action must be done for continued operation. A steady state corrosion rate is assumed to predict the remaining life of the piping section. The methodology suggested in this paper is useful for designers and plant engineers in timely detection of localized corrosion and leaks in the pressure piping used in fl uid catalytic cracking units and initiate suitable corrective action based on their criticality.
