Pulsed Eddy Current Testing of Friction Stir Welds

In this study, the pulsed eddy current technique is employed for the testing of butt and lap joint friction stir welded coupons. Unlike conventional eddy current techniques, pulsed eddy current can penetrate thicker welds, and its response signal is re p resented in the time domain. Specific testing settings and signal manipulations are discussed with the goal of demonstrating the pulsed eddy current technique’s capability to detect characteristic friction stir weld discontinuities.
