Phased array ultrasonic techniques are gaining acceptance in various industries. One of the largest uses of phased array ultrasonic techniques is for weld inspection on piping and pressure vessels. Other areas where this technique is used are manufacturing, turbine inspection, and to a limited extent aerospace. Phase array ultrasonics was fi rst used on a large scale in the medical industry. Once a highly specialized, expensive diagnostic tool, phased array ultrasonics is used in a routine basis in almost every hospital and diagnostic clinic. In the many years of development the medical imaging has evolved into a highly sensitive tool that can locate small tumors and measure blood fl ow. These improvements can be benefi cial in many areas in industrial applications. Application of medical phased array technology as applied to aerospace inspections will be discussed and examples presented.
