Model-Based Classification of Thin Layers in Multi-Layered Materials Using Nondestructive Ultrasonic Testing

Non-destructive testing (NDT) of materials using ultrasound is considered a valuable tool to characterize thin layers in multi-layered structures. The material structures give rise to signal waveforms of overlapping ultrasonic echoes. These situations imply difficulties in locating and characterizing the layers or small defects within them. In extensive analysis of materials or in process control the number of measurements increases and the amount of data becomes difficult to handle, hence a model-based approach is useful.
